Adoption Process
Please complete an adoption application form. The link to the online form can be found here. Once you have completed the form select the Submit button and it will be sent directly to me, Coffee’s foster mum. I will then call you to discuss your application and answer any questions you may have If Coffee and your family look like a good match then we can arrange a time when you, your family and any other dogs you may also have can meet Coffee. This is the time when you can see how your dog and Coffee interact with each other as well as how Coffee interacts with you and the other members of your family. All adoptions begin with a two week ‘sleepover’. The sleepover is designed to be a ‘trial period’ to give you, your family and Coffee time to learn about and adjust to each other. Often with adoptions, the second week of a dog coming into a new home is when their personality really comes out as they become more comfortable in their new environment.
As Coffee has some care-specific needs, I will spend a morning or an afternoon with you and your family going over these with you, demonstrating how to help him go to the bathroom and answering any other questions you may have. During the sleepover I will be available by telephone and email to see how it’s going and to discuss any issues or other questions with you. If, after the sleepover, you and your family decide you wish to go ahead with the adoption, then it will be finalized. However, if for whatever reason, adopting Coffee does not look like it will work out with your family, then Coffee will come back to me. Please also know that I would love to continue to help out with Coffee and his care after he is adopted, so if you need any further advice I’m just an email or telephone call away. I’d also love to help look after Coffee if you need to go away for a weekend or a longer vacation!
Since being saved from the streets of Taiwan, Coffee’s care has been covered by private donations from veterinarian clinics and dog lovers with
huge hearts. He was treated in Taiwan for decubitus ulcers (pressure sores), skin lichen and was given therapy to help stimulate movement in his rear legs. Now that he’s in the U.S., Coffee still has one pressure sore that is requiring some ongoing medical treatment. The cost for this treatment and his ongoing needs are a drain on the rescue funds and so any help that you’re able to provide would be welcomed with a large wet kiss from Coffee! We are also looking into getting hydrotherapy/acupuncture therapy for Coffee to stimulate his back legs. Currently he can move them and sometimes can even stand on them, though he is a little wobbly! This treatment is very expensive though.
Here’s a quick list to give you an idea of what Coffee regularly needs:
- Bootees for walks on his cart so he doesn’t cut his feet - $30 for 2 pairs (I’m desperately trying to make one pair last amonth by sticking layers of gorilla tape over the toes)
- Pure pureed pumpkin - $2.50 a can (Coffee needs high-fiber food as his intestines were slightly damaged by the accident – one can usually lasts about a week)
- Baby wet wipes - $2.50 a box (a box lasts about a week to a week and a half)
- Bed pads - $15 for a box of 30 (a box lasts about 2 months)
- Kids jogging pants - $5 each (thank goodness for Kohl’s sales! I add elastic suspenders to these and
put them on Coffee so he can hang out with us around the house and not hurt his legs)
Nor Cal Animal Rescue Friends (NCARF). Please be sure to put Coffee’s name in the Comment section on the PayPal page or on the check so we can make sure your donation goes to help with his care and medical expenses. Checks should be made payable to N.C.A.R.F. and be sent to the following address:
P.O. Box 580327 Elk Grove, CA 95758
Any amount you’re able to spare will help Coffee - $5 gives him a new boot next month!
Get the word out about Coffee
Our eventual goal is of course to find Coffee his own family where he can have his forever home. For now he is living with me and his foster brother and sister (Oscar and Mia, two more beagles) but all the while I foster Coffee I’m unable to foster any other dogs who also need to find their forever home. If you, or anyone you know would be willing to help get the word out about Coffee or even adopt him, then please contact me to talk about this further ajawilli@yahoo.com.
I know many (or all) of you who are reading this must think it’s a daunting task looking after a handicapped dog, but I’m single, live alone, work full time and I manage it, as well as caring for my own dogs, but the rewards are ten-fold. Coffee is barely aware of his handicap and is able to do most activities that other dogs can do other than escape a fenced yard and jump up on the sofa! Ah ha, you think, doesn’t sound so bad after all! He loves his walks on his cart and hanging out around the house with me and the other dogs and is an excellent snuggler.
If this sounds like the kind of dog that would complete your family then please complete the Adoption Application Form.
